I've been two songs away from beating Guitar Hero on Expert for three weeks now. This collection of Guitar Hero tabs (via Kotaku) may finally help pull me over the top. Friday, February 17, 2006
Even if you don't normally buy or read comics, perhaps you might consider going down to your local comic shop in April and picking up Superman/Batman #26, for a good cause and in memory of Sam Loeb. Thursday, February 16, 2006
LED Throwies and how to make them. It's because of things like this that it's probably a good thing I don't have unlimited disposable income. Who knew there was more than one Star Wars house in Seattle? Check out the Bobacabana. The first and second prototype rooms for things that will really make your head spin if you're a Star Wars toy geek. (Via Metafilter, where the geek-smack stopped when the owner of the house showed up in the thread.) Jon pointed the way toward the astonishing Vault Radio, another incredible audio stream I'm listening to in rotation with the podcasts I subscribe to and the also-incredible Pandora. Remind me again why I need radio when I'm not in my car? Wednesday, February 15, 2006
A fantastic little game from the kids at Digipen: Rumble Box. Their bandwidth is getting a little smashed right now, so if you don't get through right away go back later. (Or you could email me, I suppose.) "Under normal conditions the molecules within the material are weakly bound and can move past each with ease, making the material flexible. But the shock of sudden deformation causes the chemical bonds to strengthen and the moving molecules to lock, turning the material into a more solid, protective shield." Pretty cool--the skiers on the US and Canadian Olympic teams are wearing suits made of fabric that hardens into a protective shell upon impact. Now the race begins: who will use it in their fiction first--Bruce Sterling, Cory Doctorow, or Warren Ellis? Tuesday, February 14, 2006
Speaking of wikis: While capable of great juvenileness, the goons at Something Awful are also capable of great undertakings. Their subforum dedicated to discussion of television shows, the TV IV, has rolled out one of those undertakings: TViv.org, a television-related wiki gathering together show guides, episode guides, commentary and reviews. Great stuff--check out the period broadcast schedules for an example that this goes far beyond what you might expect. If you've given up on pastafarianism and are looking for to help revive a relgious classic, perhaps you'd like to join the Cult of John Frum (via Boing Boing.) I've only been using PBWiki for a short while, but it's already joined my favorite web tools like Blogger and Flickr. Like other Web 2.0 tools, you lose a little bit by having your content on webspace you don't control, but PBWiki more than makes up for it by making setting up a wiki incredibly easy--leaving only the reasonably simple task of learning to use wiki grammar. (And as full disclosure, they occasionally run cool deals where if you tell your friends about PBWiki they'll double the size of the webspace they give you for free. So check it out!)
