I thought it might be a joke when I heard it on The Daily Show a couple nights ago, but no: Beck is a Scientologist. How 'bout that?

If, like me, you're patiently waiting for the next issue of Planetary to hit the stands, you might enjoy perusing a site with some good commentaries on the series.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a railroad tanker car, I give you a slightly undertrained industrial cleaning crew, and I give you physics in action (via Metafilter.)

News you can use: How many caffinated sodas would it take to kill you?* (via Digg.)

* HINT: My guess of "two cans in a sock" was wrong.

pictureWhen I finally get around to going back through my archives to metatag and categorize everything, I'll probably need a whole category just for comic-themed Flash movies.

Add Aquaman: It's Not Easy to Be Me to the bunch.

Thanks to Jessica Jones, I got to enjoy seeing Fanboy Rampage riff a bit on HeroClix (of course, I'm not entirely certain how many of them know what it actually is, and how many were just being instinctively snarky.) Click on the comments for the post to see it for yourself.

Katamari Damacy + LEGO = Katamari Brickacy. Sadly not actually coming soon. (via Waxy.)

It's a robotic hand made of LEGO (via digg.)

I've talked with several people lately about the technical process behind making mash-ups, but didn't have much detail to offer. Here's a tutorial that should be help you learn more or be a good guide to getting started with your own.

The Great Summer Upgrade continues! My long-dormant Flickr stream comes to life with my favorite picture from San Diego a couple weeks ago (also appearing in the right sidebar as a local stream via a Flickr badge.)

I'm already weary of the Hot Coffee scandal, and it's just kicking into gear*. Still, I want to keep providing some of what I feel is good commentary on the matter; if the political bandwagon keeps gaining steam*, it's going to have a lot of unintended and grave consequences in the game industry.

Thus, I encourage you to read the commentary by Steven Johnson (no relation) on Senator Clinton's burgeoning investigation. The swing at football is a bit of a rhetorical cliche in these arguments, but I suppose it's worth bringing up again alongside the other good points Johnson makes.

* Yeah, the bandwagon is steam-powered and has a transmission. Crazy, I know.

I've been playing with and using XML feeds and RSS aggregators quite a bit lately, so I figured it was time to take that big step into 2003 and publish one of my own for OD. Thus, I give you the Ober Dicta RSS feed.

(A sign of how far behind the bleeding-edge I am: it was as easy as turning one of my Blogger settings to "yes" and giving it a folder to drop the feed into.)

If you ever need to find the feed in the future, just go to the big standards-orange XML button over in the sidebar to the left.

One of my favorite things about blogs is that there's nothing I love better than riding along inside the head of creative people I respect and admire: Paul Dini, one of the masterminds behind Batman: The Animated Series and other terrific animated fare, is blogging.

pictureFully recovered from the Blight of '04, 100,000 superballs were released into the wilds of San Francisco yesterday.

(Okay, okay--it was actually for a commerical filmed near Evhead's house.)

Today's serendipitous discovery via Google: a guide to financial scandals of all sorts, with links to everything from the story of the Japanese president of Peru to the mysterious death of God's banker.

Despite their link to OD, it's not just blogrolling to give you a link to Amazing Motor Girls; I encourage you to enjoy the cheesecake, but also scroll down to check out the links they have to offer. You'll probably start seeing some of them (like Travelling Armchair and the terrific Nuts and Bolts breakdown of the cost of their trip) on OD soon. Always good to find a new source.

Via digg, a cinematographer who tore apart a Ford F150, welded armor plating to the frame, and built the Tornado Intercept Vehicle, a "mobile tripod" for an IMAX camera that will allow him to film as he drives straight into a twister. Someday soon we'll either be reading about his funeral or seeing some awesome footage.
