Here and here are a couple of Flash movies that are probably pretty funny if you understand the complete, convoluted continuity of the X-Men comics. However, I can vouch that they're also pretty good if you don't. (via Batman's Shameful Secret over on the SA Forums)Friday, March 18, 2005

Via Metafilter, a look at promotional and PSA comics. Somewhere in the depths of my comic collection I own at least a dozen of these, from the Kool-Aid Man comics and the TRS-80 Whiz Kids books to--so help me--Sprocket Man.Dungeons & Dragons for Dummies. Not that the Player's Handbook is the most accessible book in the world, but I have to admit that I still don't understand the people who need to stoop to being a 'dummy' before they'll seek out a reference book. DartMail. Jon will confirm that this technology should not be set loose in our offices. The same is likely true of NerfMail. MarbleMail might be okay, though. All are just some of the devices you can find in the Phidget Gallery. Just what I've always been looking for--milk chocolate Loki, only one of the sweet pantheon produced by Chocolate Deities (via Memepool.) Tuesday, March 15, 2005
I'm saddened to hear that Karen Wynn Fonstad has passed away. I've been a big fan of her work for a long time, since the Atlas of Pern was one of the first books I ever ordered from the Science Fiction Book Club. I later had the chance to meet her when her son lived down the hall from me in college, one of the first chances I had to connect a person with a name on the cover of a book. When I was compiling data from my manuscript into the maps for Kingdoms of the Sword and Stars a few years ago, I thought of her and considered trying to get in touch with the Fonstads again. I wish I had. Stumbled across in a year-old Metafilter discussion thread: Brainteasers: The Aftermath. Worth reading for the third aftermath alone. Yet another fantastic gaming setup with a ceiling-mounted digital projector connected to a Photoshop-equipped laptop--allowing the GM to reveal the map in real time. Pretty neat. Poking around the web for the current whereabouts of Harry "the Hat" Anderson (turns out he and his wife are operating a particularly cool-sounding store called Sideshow in New Orleans), I stumbled across a mention of "chapeaugraphy"--where performers use a partocularly versatile hat as their only prop to become a variety of characters. A bit of Googling and I found that you can watch a movie of a chapeaugraphy act* on the website of magician Daniel Adrian, read a history of chapeaugraphy, or even order your own Chap-O (although adding your own logo seems to break the act's sense of wonder just a bit.)* My apologies to Adrian for linking directly to media on his site; be sure to follow the other link and check out the rest of his site as well. |
