Re the end of today's Bleat: it's not something I do when with passengers, so as to avoid looking all crazy-like, but parking unreasonably far out in parking lots and walking in? On my own, I do it all the time. It's nice to see I'm in good company.

“The thing about democracy is that, if you pay a lot of attention to current events, you will find yourself in disagreement with "most people" a great deal of the time. This is because "most people" have other things on their minds. If you want to conclude from this that they're mostly "dittoheads," "attack dogs," or "underinformed", well, you're free to, even though this is exactly the kind of talk Karl Rove likes to see coming out of liberal mouths. Demonstrating patent contempt for one's fellows isn't really a very effective way of convincing anyone of anything."

"Politics is work. Part of the work involves being "happy warriors," including when we don't feel like it. A reliably salient characteristic of work is that if we don't do it, the opposition will."

Omit the second third sentence of the first paragraph if it rubs you the wrong way, and you'll still have a strong mission statement for how I wish more people participated in modern American politics--working hard for what they believe in without dismissing those who disagree with them.

(Updated as I apparently had a temporary inability to count.)

Demonstrating that nifty bar tricks aren't limited just to cards and lighters, here's Tricks with Hats (via J-Walk). From hat spinning to hat throws, it's all here. Now all you have to do is wear a derby hat into a bar.

I'm off to the woods to enjoy the holiday weekend with some friends, so unless I sneak in some more posting tonight or manage to connect from the Net cafe up north, I'll see you Monday.

Via PvP, Frank Cho is auctioning off a piece of original art called "Monkey Fight Club" that was commisioned for Wizard, but bounced by DC. Gee, I wonder why? Could it be because a rabid Blip is chained to a raging Gleek and they're fighting it out with switchblades? Could it be because Superman and Space Ghost appear to be gambling on the outcome? Maybe it's because the Wonder Twins are making out in the background, or due to the cigarette Jan has clutched between her teeth, or because Batman appears to be hitting on Jace. Most likely, it's all of those and more. Check out the full piece and don't miss the jokes hidden all over the piece.

In recent weeks I've become a fan of Yahoo's Editors' Photography Picks page. the editors doing the selection have their own interesting quirks, and* it's certainly less prurient than the Most Emailed Photos page I'd been watching heretofore.

* but?

Even through a translator I can only half-understand what's going on, but apparently someone on a French forum tried to pass off fiction I wrote for Rune as their own and is getting called on it.

Via Newsarama, a blog by Harvey Pekar, the author of American Splendor. If you don't know Splendor now, you will when the movie hits theaters later this year ("August 15th in NYC, LA, and Cleveland!".) From the preview, it looks pretty good. Since Duets, I've been waiting for Paul Giamatti to get a role he could really dig into.

The Illustrated Catalog of ACME Products (via Mefi.) Unfortunately, I can't find the online order page or I'd order an ACME Time-Space Gun today.
