Via Metafilter, the ORBITER spaceflight simulator (and a link to an old favorite site, JPL's Basics of Space Flight.) Wow. Friday, March 21, 2003

A Defence Ministry spokesman said: “Beer is cheap in Germany and our soldiers have a lot of their budget left to spend on other things. Although in a real battle they would probably attract the enemy so could not be worn, there is no reason why they should not enjoy them in training.” I can think of one reason to wear them in battle: they're FREAKIN' COOL! WHAT HAS COME BEFORE: I see texture artists at work who use....particular materials...as a basis for "realistic textures"; Lore puts a picture on the web and says "do what you like"; I download it and go looking for raw materials. WHAT HAS RESULTED: ![]() I must really be avoiding finishing my taxes if I'm getting racy in my procrastination. You know, I was just saying to my self, "Self, what do they think of Destro in Japan?" Well now I know, thanks to the YO JOE Filecard Gallery (via Metafilter, where they zeroed right in on the elite Joe team headed by Wal-Mart founder Sam "Stonewall Sam" Walton.) If you're following war news online, be certain not to miss Where is Raed?, written by a citizen of Baghdad and rapidly climbing Blogdex. Wednesday, March 19, 2003
Yes, Karla, I've been making more Fanta movies as well: Tuesday, March 18, 2003
So on the eve of war, Lileks and Instapundit are waxing on groceries. It's like surfing the BizarroWeb. Guardians of Order has announced that they're working on an Authority/Stormwatch RPG. Neat! I'm still not sold on the Tri-Stat system, but I look forward to reading the book. The note I put there requesting this to NOT be done was not a challenge for you to do it again, or to see how grotesque and inappropriate you could get. In all seriousness, I ask you to stop. Via PCJM, Joe begs people to stop messing with his Star Wars figures. I've linked to this archive of the leaflets being dropped on Iraq before, but it's been greatly expanded and is worth checking out again. Don't miss the text of "Commado Solo" radio broadcasts (which I assumed were carried on Information Radio until a Google search revealed that Commando Solo is an aircraft.) I was scrolling through the leaflets with a few guys here at work, and we noted that the Photoshoppery and composition of the leaflets seemed deliberately crude. My guess is that the graphic artists putting them together were walking a fine line between putting together images that would convey the message to the Iraqis and putting together images that would fuel the bugaboo argument of forged images. Semms like a tough task, and it helps to explain why the CIA is always recruiting graphic artists. "Throw in as many strawberries as you can hold piled up in joined hands." I mean, really. Are we meant to write to the late Mr Olney's executors and ask how big his hands were? What if children made this jam, or circus giants? I never thought I could enjoy cookbook reviews quite so much, but Bookslut's Jessa Crispin is right; I need to start reading Julian Barnes on a regular basis. An interesting piece on Newsarama--lengthy, but well worth reading--on how mainstream comic creators are struggling to promote their work and why: Many creators feel that their projects (or other books of quality) are being moderately to criminally overlooked by retailers due to a variety of factors – too many comics solicited in any given month to devote time to making informed decisions, a lack of solicitation information, and the shift in ordering practices that seems to have grown from Marvel’s no-overprint decision. Some links sent to me by various folks in the last few days:
I caught the last half of the TV Land Awards last night, and really enjoyed it. Rather than the "what's hot now?" of the Oscars or Grammy Awards, the TVL Awards were really a celebration of the history of popular television. It was fun to see so many familiar faces, and it's great to see that folks like Don Knotts and Carl Reiner are still as hilarious as ever. And who knew there were lyrics to the "Dick Van Dyke Show" theme? The only downside was that somehow Batman missed being nominated for "Superest Superhero It looks like the show is being rerun at 2PM Wednesday and noon Sunday. Watch it if you get the chance. If I had a large pile of money I could swim through and throw coins up in the air so they would hit me on the head, I would immediately start giving out memberships to the Bunny of the Month Club (via Neil Gaiman.) Another good thing about the blogosphere: I can avoid linking to Always On (bleh) by linking to Jeff Jarvis' commentary on the craziness contained therein. A better "waiting for war" link than the one I provided earlier today, via Kevin Sites' blog--which should be required online reading in the days ahead. UPDATE 4/29/03: This post has been updated to contain the "War News" links that were in my sidebar during March and April of 2003 WAR NEWS -------------- Warblogs:cc Online Media Map CyberJournalists BBC coverage CNN Wartracker USA Today Warblog ABCNews Iraq Index Jane's Intel Dump Iraqometer Middle East Media The Agonist Instapundit L.T. Smash A Minute Longer Where is Raed? Kevin Sites Strategy Page DefenseTech Global Security Back to Iraq Saddam's blog (no) You know the world is feeling on edge when even Gummiland feels the need for a standing (and delicious!) army ![]() I've been enjoying WotC's Map-a-Week for some time. But I somehow missed their Folding Models page until now. I think I'll try one of them out when I have a spare evening. My counter's been on the fritz for a few days, and I finally took a few minutes to look into the problem. On the FAQ I found the answer to my question: Q: The counter has stopped showing up on my site and I'm seeing a broken link. The statistics reports for the account are still tracking visitors but all the charts don't display. Whats wrong? A: You have probably installed something called "SuperTrick" or "Kazza Lite" on your computer. It has put a text file on your computer called "HOSTS". Search for the "HOSTS" file (it doesn't have an extension). To fix the problem, remove any lines that have "sitemeter.com" on them. Okay, good call, and it seems to have fixed the problem. But then they keep going: You may want to go ahead to delete the entire file because it may causing you problems accessing other sites. Yes, thanks, I think I will delete my adblockers. That would be helpful. Cripes. Waiting for war, watching SARS spread...I think we all need some cheering up. Here: have a picture I took on Saturday of a pig eating cookies. You can even click on it for a larger version. ![]() You should go check out the great pictures of the Village that are being posted over on the Zustblog, too. |
