Another great user Googleapp: Googlefight!

(See this MeFi thread for the results of some classic matchups.)

The random killings occuring in the D.C. area are a terrible thing, but I can't help thinking that it sounds like a Lawrence Block story. Of course, that's probably because I'm enjoying the hell out of Enough Rope right now.

Thanks to Karla for finding this.

A card dedicated to the first game of Magic (one of only a few) I ever played, while rafting down the Missisip with a bunch of monkeys. No, really.

Acclaim UK's marketing department is at it again.

"First prize is a Cadillac. Second place is a set of steak knives. Third place is you're fired."

It's about time that Glengarry Glenross comes out on DVD, but 2 discs? What's on the second disc?

(By the way--Sports Night is coming out too--the entire series in one set. How can you go wrong at a buck an episode? Now if only They'd get off Their butts and release the second season of Twin Peaks...)

Wait a minute--Martha Stewart was on the board of the NYSE?

I never thought I'd see the day when I got good advice from Donald Rumsfeld.

Net connection at home now enabled. Thunderbirds are go.

Lately I've been ragging on the poor quality of college newspapers, so I want to make sure and point out a good article in the Diamondback about college reporters caught up in a wave of arrests at this week's IMF/WTO protests.

I'm not entirely certain that I'd pay for an MP3 stream of news, but I dig the idea of putting one in the random rotation on my WinAmp playlist. Now if only I could get such a service from NPR and WPR; stupid RealAudio streams...

In case you ever happen to end up managing a baseball team, there are a few things you could learn about the proper way to throw a tantrum.

Am I a geek because I think one of these might be kinda neat?

Via MeFi, a fantastic collection of black and white jazz photography.

Also on MeFi today, sarcasm is actually proving useful as this MeFi thread gathers together all the overused Net classics of the last year or so. If it's in this thread, everyone has seen it; stop clicking the 'Forward' button already.

(I'm trying to avoid this, but...)

Post-Modern Urban Legends, apparently a Net oldie, but one I hadn't seen before. (Thanks to Jorn Barger.)

For the last few days, Jon has been rerunning my account of our journey out to Seattle a year ago.

A year ago. It's hard to believe that's already been a year since that trip, and just over a year since I went to visit John and Lisa in Sweden. Makes a fella wonder where he's gonna be in another 365.

I have to concur with Karla that Physics Web's article on beauty in scientific experiments is indeed a great one. I am bemused, however, that the author got suckered in by someone quoting the plastic-bag bit from American Beauty.

"Something oddly profound if not downright splendid about this photo is right this moment hurling long hot strands of karmic pasta up against the purple gimmering walls of your subconscious to see if it sticks which in turn relates the message to your slippery awareness that everything you think you know for sure is probably wrong and that's usually a very good thing."

I couldn't have said it better.

"In our top story, today the Army's elite G.I. Joe team staged a raid on the home of supermodel Barbie Dahl. Dahl's residence, once called "a dream home" by Architectural Digest, was now found to be a dirty hovel home only to the crack addicts and Dahl's one-time boyfriend. Real estate agents have downgraded the home's value severely from its once-fantastic $79.99 asking price pending repairs. In the meantime, the Joe team is being allowed to use the building as their headquarters in the War on Drugs. Dahl's publicist had no comment, but said he relationship between her client and the man in residence had 'ended long ago'."

True story. See related MeFi conversation for prooflinks and commentary.

In related news, Teresa points out that Jesus is a GI Joe. Or is it the other way around?

"The Next Age of Game Development"--an interesting article that I'm still fully digesting.

The storm is on the horizon...

I just scheduled the installation of a cable modem. A cable modem and cable TV.

Soon I will be running at full mid-level productivity 24 hours a day! MWAHahahahahaha!

Doing some research today and stumbling across some interesting reading on bootleggers and moonshiners, as well as an amazing picture of a distillery fire.

Normally I find "addictive" Net games to be overrated. But I have to admit that Bookworm has me hooked...

So I've replaced the useless newsfeed with more pictures. People should let me know if they're finding them too big a drain on their bandwidth.

The Teen Titans are coming to the Cartoon Network. The only thing keeping me from jumping for joy is the weird future setting for the series. I mean, on one hand I get it; you want to set your series in a distinctive setting that provides story fodder. But my fanboy heart is a little offended.

Whatever. Maybe it'll be successful and we'll see cool TT toys out of it. And maybe my Titans comics will finally be worth more than cover for the first time in a decade.

A bit of a problem here, as our local power grid took a dive on Saturday, leading to server issues, giving rise to what is known in the technical parlance as "a dead hard drive". To know the true extent of our quandry, that drive has to be replaced. Which means I'm making a trip to Chicago. Now. So fun later, folks.

UPDATE: New server drive acquired. You may now commence having fun by generating your own rap single.
