Had a fun party last night. Some disappointing no-shows (you know who you are), but much fun was had, pizzas were made, and for those who stayed late enough, evil plans were a-footed. Then we watched a movie. With the help of Rob and Kim, I went out and scored two more geocaches this afternoon, Aldo Leopold's Neighbor and the Cafe Cache--and in the latter I found my first Secret Shaolin Swordsman. In a couple weeks, I'll take him up north beyond the Pine Curtain and deposit him in a cache somewhere near my folks' cabin. Just ordered a few things off the Geocache website, including a sticker to make my own cache and some travel bug tags--I was buying some new Playmobil this afternoon and I've found just the toy to send on an adventure. I also found the website of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association--just in time to learn that I'm missing their campout this weekend. Oh well. I'll have to be careful, or this may become a full-fledged hobby... Best lyric of the day: "I got a +1 Bag of Nerdcore Hiphop", by (of course) the master of said music, MC Frontalot. My dad passed along a link to this story about networks onboard US Navy ships built for the express purpose of playing games. It's a two-year old article; I wonder what they're playing these days... Thursday, May 16, 2002
Just in case you thought the comics industry didn't have a Milleresque character, I once again present Mr. "I Got the Smarts". "The police were always waiting for us but I learned that if you have a large number of people speeding there is very little they can really do." Speaking of cars, here's a event linked to on Metafilter today: the Gumball 3000. Held in Europe since 1999, they apparently just finished a NYC-LA race and have some pretty amazing stories. Hey, wait a minute--my car loan is through Ford Motor Credit. Does that mean my identity might have been stolen? Question is, would thieves consider Madison an "affluent area"? Guess I'll be watching my mailbox. The real question is: once I pay off the loan, does Ford still retain the right to check my credit record, or does our relationship end with my final payment? Sure seems like it should... Wednesday, May 15, 2002
"It's not a marriage folks. You don't have to be monogamous." --Metafilter user on Xbox versus Playstation 2 Today's Penny Arcade commentary on the Microsoft/Sony price war is great commentary on the subject as well (as is the strip, but you knew that), with Tycho tossing down some mad phat phyunny ("It's unrelated, but I think that Jeff Henshaw is a demon who wears his victims and masquerades as a human being.") Want to have wings like an angel? You can, so long as you don't mind being part pig and part rat as well. (Thanks to Chad for the link.) Tuesday, May 14, 2002
Anyone interested in taking a look at the Monster should go here, where it's waiting to be picked up by my editors. UPDATE: Manuscript has been retrieved, directory has been removed to prevent unwanted spread. Go buy a copy, you Googlers! Note found on my desk today: The dwarf is my slave. Do not kill him. IT. IS. DONE. One sourcebook, two appendixes, three parts, four prestige classes, six maps, seven chapters, 25 months, 31 spells, 218 manuscript pages, 65,028 words. I'm sure there will be a bit of last-minute polishing to do before I pack it up to go to my editor tomorrow, but I'm going to go sleep now, if that's all right with you. Monday, May 13, 2002
I find the best stuff surfing Yahoo's Most Popular News page. I mean sure, there's a fair share of half-naked men and women filling up the photo column, but that's just like the rest of the Internet--and there enough amusing photos (Best color scheme in a photo of young Buddhist monks Ever) and stories (Hurray! A patron saint for the Internet!) to make it worth dropping by once or twice a week. You should go read Matt Hughley's post about BMW's iDrive, because frankly, I'm speechless over how dumb this thing sounds (and just waiting for Apple's lawyers to sue them over the name.) Sure, I couldn't find a site about vintage luggage stickers when I really needed one a few months ago... Sunday, May 12, 2002
The "Church" actually loses a lawsuit for a change. (Thanks to John and Lisa for pointing me in the direction of this story.) People don't believe me when I tell them that in Mir's last days the Russian Space Agency had to buy spare parts from Mr. Wisconsin Dells, Tommy Bartlett. Well now it appears that NASA is doing much the same thing, trolling eBay for space shuttle parts (NYTimes link; requries free registration.) Also available on eBay, ancient Sumerian tablets, cheap!
