Out of the blue, problem has resolved itself. But I have faith it will return. Grrrr. I've been hearing a lot of people complain about random problems with Blogger; problem is, no two people seem to have the same problem. Perhaps it is a subtle program to make everyone more tech-savvy as they try and overcome their frustrations. Having serious problems with Blogger. The only way I can get anything to post is a) to the archives and not the front page, and b) only if I use my FTP software to go in and manually delete the archive index page first. This is really starting to piss me off, and lessens the chances that you will see any posts from me while I'm out of town. I'll keep hacking away at it in the hours until I have to leave, and we'll see what I come up with. Thursday, December 20, 2001
As a moral stand, I refuse to link anything in this post: I swear to everything anyone holds holy that someday the bastards who are accepting ad money from the X10 wireless camera will pay dearly for their wasting of my time. Sigh. Blogger is giving me problems as I try to update this. Forgive me if you don't read this Thursday entry until later. I am constantly tempted to cross-post links from Memepool, like this one about the nutjob trying to visit every Starbucks in North America. In fact, I now come clean and reveal that links from the last few days like Kung Fu Chess and the Woodcutter have been from Memepool, not the depths of Seth's Web Search Cleverness. But I now declare that this is the last time I will do so, instead suggesting you simply read Memepool yourself. Enjoy. I hope to make one more post tonight to share the text of an ad I found the other day, and then tomorrow it's off to the Great Not-So-White North to visit my friends and folks for the holidays. Hopefully I'll be able to keep posting here using my laptop; I know all four of you would be crushed not to read my words for a few days. Wednesday, December 19, 2001
Just didn't want a day to go by without posting. 'Night. Tuesday, December 18, 2001
I only have three words about tonight's episode of 24: Hoe. Lee. Crap. I may have tuned in to see how they were going to pull off the real-time schtick that failed so miserably in Nick of Time (about the only things that movie did right were casting Christopher Walken and not naming Johnny Depp's character 'Nick'), but it's the characters and the incredible plot twists that keep me coming back. I was watching it at work, and for a few minutes I was explaining what was going on and who the various characters were to two guys standing behind me. They left to go home for the night--and ten minutes later, everything I told them had been turned on its ear. Tonight's revelation....phew! I wouldn't have believed it if you had told me! Wow. If you're at all interested (and you should be), you should read up to date on the website (but don't read the synopsis of this week's "5:00-6:00 AM" episode that is bound to be posted tomorrow) and catch the rerun of the episode Friday night. I love The West Wing, but I can miss it if circumstances warrant. 24....I think I'll be upset with myself if I miss another episode. Freshly returned from their triumphant year-plus tour of the Nordic lands, my friends John and Lisa called early this morning (sadly, I was still at work) and we went out for a plateful of Americana at Denny's. It was nice to be able to go and (BEWARE: enormous wordiness disguised as link) visit them in Sweden, but it's good to have them back. The Monkey Concentration in Madison was getting a bit thin... One more link: Perhaps you were wondering what it might be like to go completely bonkersnutscrazy. Thanks to The Woodcutter, you can wonder no more! Monday, December 17, 2001
I do believe I will be spending about two months exploring this archive. Sadly, even with our fat pipe here at work most of that time will be spent downloading, but still... In other links, enjoy this movie. Sure, sure; you're one of the Clever People who has already heard of Boonga Boonga. But have you seen pictures of the game's mascots? Yow! For some reason, the question came up at Saturday's party: what do you call the part of a mechanical ice cream scoop that pushes the ice cream out of the scoop? Provided the initiative that if no other name came up it would thereforth be called "The Johnson", I embarked on some research this morning. A Google search turned up a few possibilities used by those selling scoops: 1)"Release blade" "All principle parts are made of stainless steel. The Hamilton Beach scoops have a textured plastic handle and the cog-regulated release blade works by thumb pressure." 2)"Bowl knife blade" "Exceptional portion control is made easy with color-coded handles. Sizes are also stamped on the bowl knife blade. Meets US government standards." But I dug a bit deeper and finally came up with U.S. Patent #576,395, issued on February 2, 1897 to Alfred L. Culler for his "Ice Cream Mold and Disher". It seems that even Culler was unable to give the part a precise name, calling them "cutters or blades" throughout his patent description. Thus, I say we stick with calling it "The Johnson." BONUS: Best ice cream scoop I found in this search (Look about halfway down the page) Best page that came up on Google while searching for this answer Sunday, December 16, 2001
The Humanhead holiday shindig was held earlier this evening at The Essen Haus, a local German eatery. Though I did not take advantage of the free beer, I did enjoy a fine German dinner courtesy of those suck--er, wise consumers who purchased copies of Rune and our other fine vid-jeo games. A gift raffle of sorts landed me a McFarlane Toys figure of an anime character I'm unfamiliar with. Still, it's a good figure and better than some of the others I saw (though all were toys, so how could any of them be completely wrong...) One of the guys ended up with an E.T. figure from a line apparently released in conjunction with the whole 20th anniversary shindig, and it was damn cool. I've managed to avoid buying toys for quite a while (aside from DC Direct figures), but I think I have to swing by Toys R Us tomorrow and pick up one of them. They're that neat. Came home, progressed a few more notches in SSX Tricky, and made some food for next week (a vegetarian stew from a recipe passed along by my Mom; I sampled it when it was done, and it's pretty good--though I seem to have lost my taste for sun-dried (that hyphen is just for you, Jon) tomatoes.) I then turned to cleaning my apartment while watching an old rerun of Saturday Night Live on NBC Late Night. Host: Steve Gutenberg; Musical Guest: The Pretenders. It wasn't that good a show--except that I finally saw the SNL short that was the basis for Bob Roberts, one of my favorite underrated movies. I wish I could have taped it--or better yet, already owned a Tivo, as I've been wanting for a while. But Tivo won't come until after cable, and cable doesn't come until after the holidays--at least. Oh well. Once I get it, all I'll have to do is record Comedy Central and it shouldn't be more than a couple days before they rerun it, I suppose. Hey! I just turned back to cleaning for a few minutes (now with the Bob Roberts DVD playing in the background), and I found my dice bag! I had thought it lost for at least a month and had just begun to start getting new dice. But the bag has been discovered in what I now remember I had decided was it's 'place', a semi-hidden spot on top of a bookshelf. While it was lost, I was surprised to discover the emotional attachment I had to a bag full of plastic--a lot of nostalgic ties to the dice that I got at various conventions, or that came with some of the first RPGs I bought, the Torg Possibility Shard d20s I got from Brian... I'm glad to have found them just in time for tomorrow's game. Gotta go get some sleep. I hope to spend the afternoon seeing Vanilla Sky rather than sleeping. Night. |
